Jake Rytlewski was sitting this one out due to injury, so it was left to Matt,Ryan, Andy, and Anthony to wear Astellas coloursthrough the dark of the Delray Beach Twilight Criterium. A great downtown location just outside of Miami with temperatures in the 80's had the boys especially motivated for the nights racing. We knew we were about to be extremely thankful to Rudy Project for our headwear. Fluro yellow is really easy spot in the dark! There are times when bike racing is thoroughly unforgiving. With no less than 5 crashes in this NCC race it was inevitable that one of the Astellas Cycling Team guys would be caught up in at least one.
Anthony Walsh was the unlucky man. Details about how his crash came about are loose at best, all we know is the outcome. Broken collar bone. His pain numbed by a spectator who brought him a couple of strong drinks. We wish him all the best.
Ryan did a great job of following the early attacks before the amount of training we did at camp caught up to him. He is still super young and he is a great talent. We're excited to watch him develop this year. He now spends the next few weeks with the U23 Canadian National Team in Europe.
Andy's luck ran out after being caught behind a crash at half distance. Until that point he and Matt were sticking well to each other waiting for the sprint. It was then left to Matt to try and make it high up the results sheet for Astellas. With a few late attacks from him and then trying to stay in the top 10 during United Healthcare's sprint lead out solo, energy was always going to run out at the finish. He rolled in 37th.
